The Gadget: The Torch flashlight from Wicked Lasers is currently being reviewed by Guinness as the world’s most powerful flashlight. At 4100 lumens, the Torch can easily start fires and even fry eggs.

The Verdict: Simply put, the Torch flashlight is like carrying around a floodlight in your hand. It is easily the most powerful and semi-frightening flashlight I have ever seen. However, let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that this a practical device. The only reason anyone should ever buy the Torch is to impress other nerds.

Last month I reviewed the 160 lumens Duracell Daylite and found it to be a good choice for anyone looking for a powerful, practical flashlight. It’s not a fair comparison by any means, but analyzing the results from that test against the Torch gives you a good idea of how bright this thing really is.

in order to illustrate its power, wicked lasers has released several videos showing the torch raging paper, lighting matches and frying eggs. these claims are true—as you can see from my own test illustrated in the video above. but the ardour this thing gives off is not all fun and games for pyromaniacs. it also strictly limits the usability of the flashlight. after a few minutes of use, the torch becomes too hot to hold in your hand. according to the user’s manual, it should only be used in 3 minute intervals with at least 2 minutes of “rest” in-between.

As you might have guessed, the battery life for the Torch is almost nil. I’m not sure what the exact figures are, but I doubt that you could get more than 10 minutes of continuous use out of a full-power 30 minute charge. And, to be quite honest, the scary charging unit above is fairly unreliable. I found myself frequently resetting the magnets because it registered a full-charge prematurely.

Obviously, I can’t recommend something this expensive, impractical and, quite frankly, dangerous—but if you are willing to drop $300 on a gadget that will impress your friends for a minute or two, the Torch will definitely get the job done. [Wicked Lasers]

I am spending a week in Nairobi before heading home. Life here is indescribably different than in Narok, with the girls, and at the rescue center. Nairobi is a very cosmopolitan city and a hub for East African politics, commerce and tourism. There are something like 64 different ethnic groups represented within the city ? black Africans, of course, Indians, Europeans, with “mzungus” (white people, in Swahili) making up a marked minority. Nairobi is one of several international cities that has banned the use of plastic, unrecyclable bags. Everyone that I have met in Kenya knows of Barack Obama. His grandmother lives outside of Kisumu. If he is elected president, I think there will be a national day of celebration here.

okay, this politics emotional attachment with espn has gotten just a little too weird at this point. in august, barack obama sat down for an interview and the network’s pr department stated that it was trying to grow older a hold of john mccain on a sit down of his own. they followed that up with an interview at the beginning of this week with the republican candidate and the whole shooting match seemed to be all through and done with in regards to politics and the “leader”.well yesterday, mds at fanhouse put up an interesting transmit in regards to a developing espn “pro-obama” stance and how multiple employees have made contributions to the democratic nominee….a database search of donations to the campaigns of obama and john mccain reveals that at least six espn editorial employees — desmond howard, scoop jackson, kelly naqi, john saunders, bill walton and stephen a. smith — have dedicated to obama’s campaign. no espn editorial employees are listed as donors to mccain’s campaign in the records at opensecrets.org.i asked espn spokesman josh krulewitz what espn’s policy is on civil donations, and he told me:”for espn in general, decisions on political donations are made by employees entirely on their own. as a service to specifically folks with editorial roles, we discourage public participation in matters of administrative advocacy or confrontation.”while the post was an interesting thought, i uncommonly don’t reflect on that someone exercising their constitutional right to support and vote for whomever they elect is an issue. i cogitate on that point was made in the quote from josh krulewitz, but an interesting thing happened today potentially in retort to the picture above .without any press releases on the matter, and without warning, john mccain showed up via give someone a tinkle object of an interview on mike and mike in the morning. with the way that espn promoted both sports center interview this was a very odd, but it got precise weirder as greenberg and golic were hyping the senator’s appearance before he came on. every yet they brought up mccain they made a spelled out point of saying that they were not being biased and greenberg even said, “and yes democrats, we are working to bring barack obama on the show expectedly as soon as next week,” at one point. that’s an spare choice of words if you ask me and the retreat greenie it put it made it seem little short of defensive in nature.you can hear that and see the interview in the video below, but this entire contradiction, skepticism and unpremeditated appearances are the reason they should contain not gone done this direction in the first place. whether they were trying for an angle or not, alliances and plot theories are without exception going to drop into frisk when politics are mixed up with. i improvise the lesson learned is to just restrain sports and the white house separate from here on out….update: according to espn it was an item in a mid week update that espn emails out each wednesday. not perfectly the same as the first go around but and it was a bit buried in that release, after a bunch of nfl items.does espn have a pro-obama sway? Building upon our discussions of How to Ask for a Raise, Evading Salary Questions and The Best Way to Get a Raise, a Wall Street Journal reader asks “How can I be honest about my current salary but also command the salary I deserve at a new company?” The Journal responds:

To get what you think you deserve, you’ll definitely want to know why you have been underpaid. Once you get a handle on why you’ve be underpaid, you’ll be better able to explain it honestly in an interview.

Recruiters and human resources personnel ask this question because they want to know where you fit into their compensation structurenot necessarily to figure out how little they can pay you. But, there are ways to get around giving a specific number at the beginning of the interview or even shifting the focus of the question when asked about your current salary. The first thing to keep in mind is that companies are most interested in your experience. They want to know that the person they’re offering a position to can handle the everyday challenges on the job. “Be very clear about how your experience and talent fits directly with the new position,” says Andrea Eisenberg, a senior human resources consultant in New York.

Then, when the conversation gets around to a hiring manager’s question about what you’re making, Paul Gavejin, managing director of Total Compensation Solutions, a compensation consulting firm in Armonk, N.Y. suggests asking a few questions in return. You might say: “I’d be happy to tell you, but first, I’d really like to know what you think this job is worth?” or “What is the salary range for this job?” You could also reply with by shifting the subject and saying, “I’m looking at jobs in this salary range.” It might also help to adjust your thinking when you respond. Think in terms of total compensation, and not just salary alone. To that end, you might respond, “My salary is X, my annual bonus is Y and the employer contribution to my 401(k) is Z. All totaled, my current compensation package is worth $(X+Y+Z).”
